JetЛАГ-2010 presents: Marc Nasdor @ Jetlag.edu

On Sunday at JetLag there will be a series of workshops in which the main theme will be education + fun. Or, more appropriately, fun = education!
In the frame of this program is a New Yorker; a poet, musician, and world music DJ.... Marc Nasdor! He is known to many as "Marc" from Mehanata. Marc is the author of "Sonnetailia" (Roof Books, 2007) and other books, and he will conduct "Runglish" , a round table discussion.

Poet and musician Marc Nasdor will lead an open workshop for Russian-language songwriters who, as many audiences have noticed, have been writing and singing some of their lyrics in English.

Part round-table discussion, part workshop and recital, it will be a chance for musicians to speak about their own lyric-writing development; how Russian lyrics, and the themes that arise in them, are being ported over to English-speaking audiences. We will exchange ideas about how to bring the Russian and Ukrainian sensibilities, social interactions, trans-national life experiences to listeners in the US/Canada/UK, in addition to the melodic aspects. Songwriters are encouraged to bring lyrics to the workshop to present examples of how they have been responding to the challenge in using English, or even "Runglish" in their songs. The notion is to promote literary exchange through music--something that already happens in poetry and fiction--with the goal of expanding the audiences here, and most important, to inject fresh and previously unknown [to American listeners] aesthetics into the mix, focusing on absolutely current and topical experience.

BIO:
Marc Nasdor is a poet, writer and musician is a native of Baltimore who has lived in New York City since 1980. He was involved for a decade with the late poet Allen Ginsberg and several prominent poets in the promotion and translation of international poetry for publication, the stage and the radio. He has also spent more than 25 years involved with the Hungarian arts scene in the US and in Budapest and Pécs, Hungary.

"Nataliya Nelubova's Band" is a group from Siberia that plays Siberian psycho-rock and sings Siberian style yodel.Inspired by the treasures of ancient the Kulaiytsi people, who originated around Tomsk very long ago. At JetLag, the group will present two of their musical albums: "Somana Kukun" - a Shaman ritual in the Russian-Kulai languages with elements of reggae.
"Cabaret of a Silver Century" - a wild, but curious rendition of Vertinskiy accompanied by musicians from a provincial Philharmonics."

There’s nothing inside of our planet. Actually, that isn’t really what I mean to say. It’s closer to my true intention to say that there isn’t anything. And anyway, the fact remains regardless, that whatever I mean or don’t mean to say, and do or don’t in fact say, with any amount of success (for there is a quantifiable spectrum of success in these things), the fact, ladies and gentlemen, remains proven conclusively time and again by the largest and brightest minds throughout countless centuries, that there is not, nor ought, nor indeed can there be, anything at all inside, or outside, or anywhere near or around our planet.

WHAT IS KLEZMER?
WELL, IT DEPENDS IN WHAT LANGUAGE!
In Hebrew it's: "a blend of melodies" (kle-zemer), "musical instruments".
In Yiddish it's: "a musician" playing Jewish folk music (for example) at weddings.
In English, it has three meanings: (1) "A modern musical style, with ties to Jewish folk music".
(2) "A modern musical style, with ties to ethno-avantgardism, radicalism, experimentalism... in short - serious listening"
(3) "A modern ethnic mix, fusion, not necessarily Israeli, not necessarily folk, and not necessarily music; But it's very cool." (аmer.)
In Russian it's: Everything above, an so much more.
THE KLEZMER SET at SPELL-ART will be showcasing musicians who are familiar with all of these different meanings of Klezmer and are able to bring them to life. Such as:
Frank London (The Klezmatics, Klezmer Brass Allstars, Hassidic New Wave, Afro-Semitic Experience) - Trumpet player, Composer, Arranger, Band leader, and Teacher.
Dmitri ‘Zisl’ Slepovitch (Minsker Kapelye, Foolish Band, National Yiddish Theatre – Folksbiene) - Clarinetist, Researcher of Jewish folklore, Ethnomusicologist, Singer, and Composer
